1. The way an audience perceives the play is shaped by the choice of performance venue, as well as the set that is designed for the play. Indeed, all the elements that you see and hear during a performance are bound to shape your perception of the play. Which of the following venues do you think can best meet the needs of the play?
Choose one of the follow and explain why you have selected this kind of venue. proscenium, arena, thrust, flexible
I would chose to have this play performed in a thrust stage because it is intimate and the audience needs to be able to see the details of the scenes. They need to see the distance between Val and Wilis as much as possible and it fits best with a thrust stage. Three quarters of the stage interjects toward the audience.
2. What are some of the challenges posed by the play on the stage design team?
There are a couple challenges the design team might come across during this play. The first and main concern is how to quickly remove the car from the first scene. It is a necessary prop that needs to be included in only the first scene. The second problem might be displaying the scene with Charlie because he talks so much about his past that it would fit perfectly in a movie with memories playing. You have to make sure the light is on him so the audience will not get distracted while he is talking.
3. Choose a character from the play and suggest how she/he should be dressed. In what ways do you think the costume would help accentuate his/her character? Be sure to indicate which scene you have selected to costume that character. You might even upload a picture of the kind of dress you think would be suitable for that character to wear.
Rusty should be dressed in old-fashioned button down shirts and boots. He should also always looks very clean and well kept together. It could signal that he is older, yet he is very detail-oriented with himself. He plays by the rules. There should be no crazy patterns or wacky colors. His boots should be very masculine as well.
4. Given the content of the play, how might the lighting design help further the mood of the production? Move thru the play scene by scene to provide a possible progression.
Since this play begins in a nighttime setting, lighting is crucial. The lighting for the first scene should act as a street lamp that is kinda dim and doesn’t focus on one character. It should probably be lit in the middle of the stage between the two men. The next scene should be lighter, yet still a bit dim because Val comes home to Alea in the middle of the night. The bar scene with Charlie should also be dimly lit. This play has many dark, serious scenes so the lighting should never be intense, except for the last scene. The light should focus on Val because he is testifying his story to the police department.
5. Suggest music or sound effects that might be used to accentuate the mood or atmosphere of the play and the transitions between parts of the play. You might even choose to upload music or sound effects that you think are suitable for the play, or moment in the play, or as preshow music or transitions from one scene to another.
Since this is a serious play, there should be slower music playing. Nothing too eccentric or happy should be played. I would suggest song with instruments like pianos or saxophones would give off a serious mood to the audience.
